The Best 30-Minute, Boredom-Busting Treadmill Workout

It's about this time of year -- when it's "spring," but still feels like winter in most places -- that the gym seems especially monotonous to me. The worst  offender: The treadmill. How many of us hop on and walk/jog at a slowish pace, counting every minute until we can get off? Take it from me: Don't waste your time!  Instead, try one of these two interval workouts. They'll leave you leaner and stronger than a steady-state run, keep you focused, and torch calories in 30 minutes flat.

30-minute Hill Workout

  • 10-minute walk or light jog
    • Intensity: 3-6
  • 5 x 2-minute hills with 1-minute recoveries
    • Incline: 7% (for recoveries, too!)
    • Intensity: 6-8, or as fast as you can sustain for 2 minutes
  • 5-minute cool down

30-minute HIIT Workout

  • 10-minute walk or light jog
    • Intensity: 3.5-6
  • 8 x 1-minute hard intervals with 1-minute recoveries
    • Intensity: 8-10 -- as fast as you can!
  • 5-minute cool down
