The only sneakers you need to buy

Posted by Cariset on

When I was packing for some upcoming travel this week, I faced an age-old dilemma: What sneakers do I bring?

Here's my criteria. When I'm traveling, I want ONE pair of sneakers that a.) are cute enough that they don't look dorky with jeans (so I can wear them in the airport or sightseeing), b.) support me well enough for shorter runs and workouts, and c.) are comfy AF. I've tried nearly every pair of sneaks on the market at this point, so I'm sharing my two cents below. I've finally found a winner!

Cara's Sneaker Challenge

Criteria: Look, Support, and Comfort
Max score: 👟👟👟👟👟
Nike Free RN

Price: $100
Available here: Nike

Look: 👟👟👟👟👟
Support: 👟👟
Comfort: 👟👟👟👟

Overall Grade: B

These are the classic Nikes that you've likely seen several women wearing in black (or you already own yourself). I think they're super cute, and they come in a variety of colors based on what you're going for. (Though I love the "pink tint" color above, I actually bought the "diffused blue" color for more of a muted look.) My big gripe with these is they offer little to no support, which is entirely the point of the "free" -- but for me, that makes it uncomfortable to run, and not ideal for any interval training (my feet feel like they're slipping within the sneakers, even though they fit).
Allbirds Wool Runners

Price: $95
Available here: Allbirds

Look: 👟👟👟
Support: 👟
Comfort: 👟👟👟👟👟

Overall Grade: C+

Here's the deal. Allbirds are truly the most comfortable sneakers out there. They make your feet feel like they're nestled in a bed of clouds. But I'm not crazy about the look, and more importantly, there's no way I could work out in them. It'd feel like working out in slippers.
Asics GEL-Nimbus

Price: $160
Available here: Asics

Look: 👟👟
Support: 👟👟👟👟👟
Comfort: 👟👟👟👟

Overall Grade: B+

These are hands down my favorite running sneakers. I got fitted for them in high school and have been buying the exact same sneaker ever since. If you're on the market for a running shoe in particular, go to your local running store and get fitted (they'll watch you run a bit, look at your stride, then find the best shoes for you). That said -- these puppies look pretty nerdy with jeans. I've definitely done it before, but it's not ideal.
WINNER: APL TechLoom Pro Mesh

Price: $140
Available here: Net-a-Porter

Look: 👟👟👟👟👟
Support: 👟👟👟👟
Comfort: 👟👟👟👟

Overall Grade: A-

These are my winners! APL is a newer brand that makes performance running sneakers that actually look cute. The ones above are my favorite style -- they're sleek, comfortable, and look great with a Cariset backpack. 😉They get an A- only because they took a day to break in (I got a blister on my heel the first time I wore them). But now, they're perfect.
